Holyoke Mayors Race

January 24, 2009

Alot of posts about who should be Mayor, have been floating around Masslive.com, but they all pertain to has-beens or has-nots.

This city is in a mess, and needs a new direction, an influx of new ideas that nobody ever talks about.

We feel like we need to grab at every opportunity that comes knocking on our door. Sure the citizens will have to deal with escalating taxes, fees, and a reduction of services, but at what sacrifice. When you think about it, the citizens will bear the brunt of the cost, without proper planning.

For instance, the Lowes project zoning change as been approved, HG&E said they would put $500k into a downtown redevelopment fund from the $3 million dollar sale.

Well, its the taxpayers and ratepayers putting $500k into a redevelopment fund. Once again the citizens pay the price.

The transfer station, although in a correct location, with so-called minimal impact. The design of the building looks like a pile of waste.

We need architectural design standards in this city. We need to modernize the look tying in the new with the old, and ripping out the ugly.

Personally, I would like to see the downtown area redesigned. blocking off High St. creating a walking mall full of retail shops, restaurants with outside dining, heck we could even put in a bandstand and have city concerts with bands looking for exposure.  improving the facades of the existing buildings, removing all automotive facilities from the area, require building on all vacant lots in the corridor. give businesses incentives to open up, such as license and fee waivers. maybe even put in a trolley system on high st.

Tear down the old police station and build a fanuel hall type building to incorporate the Farmers Market, an indoor open air ground floor, with retail shops on the upper level

Then we can tie it all in with the canal walk and the art district.

The list goes on and on.

Holyoke don’t settle for the past, embrace the future

Choose someone who dreams of a better Holyoke, through creative expansion
